Can you identify the species of a cell line, If is rat or mouse cell line?

Yes, we can perform interspecies identification for closely related species. We use a two-pronged molecular approach by targeting the mitochondrial genome using multiplex PCR-based assay to rapidly identify the most common cell culture species and quickly detect cross-contaminations among these species. Following for speciation and identification of a wider variety of cell lines, we amplify and sequence a "barcode region" about 648 pb using a universal primer mix that targets a few conserved sequences of the cytochrome C oxidase I gene (COI).This method helps to reduce the challenge of using short tandem repeat profiling which offers a solution for only a limited number of species (primary human, mouse) and isoenzyme analysis which results with low sensitivity because it requires a large amount of the contaminant present and cross-contamination within closely related species.
