What is the optimal size of a Molecular Beacon?

For a molecular beacon to work well a molecular beacon should be between 18 to 45 bases long. However, depending on the design it is possible to use longer sequence stretches or a sequence with modified bases such as a BNA or 2' O-Methyl RNA monomer.
