After a meal, a complex network of peripheral peptides suppresses appetite and signal fullness by acting on central targets.

Ingested food passes through the digestive system known as the gastrointestinal tract, also called the GI tract or digestive tract, including the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. The GI tract is a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube from the mouth to the anus. The hollow organs that make up the GI tract are the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus. The liver, pancreas, and gallbladder are the solid organs of the digestive system.

The approximate time of passage for food after intake: mouth to stomach ~10 seconds, food remaining in stomach ~1 to 3 hours, remaining in small intestine for 7 to 9 hours, in cecum, a pouch connected to the junction of the small and large intestines, for 25 to 30 hours, and in the colon for 30 to 120 hours.

The hypothalamus with its arcuate nucleus and its subordinated centers for “satiety,” the paraventricular nucleus, and “hunger,” the lateral hypothalamus, regulates bodyweight.
