Peptide nutraceuticals or peptide nutraceuticals are derived from proteins
Peptide nutraceuticals are peptide-based health supplements derived from proteins. Unlike standard protein powders that require digestion, these peptides are already partially broken-down proteins, usually consisting of 2 to 50 amino acid residues. Because of their smaller size, they are highly bioactive and are quickly absorbed by the human body. When a regular protein, for example when eating a steak, is consumed, the digestive system breaks it down into individual amino acids. Peptide nutraceuticals bypass the major digestive steps and may act as biological messengers. Some of these peptides can enter the bloodstream intact, resisting destruction by digestive enzymes. Once absorbed, they bind to specific receptors on cells, potentially "switching on" processes like collagen production, immune defense, or muscle repair.
Table 1: Categories of Nutraceuticals
| Peptide Type | Common Source | Primary Health Benefits |
| Collagen Peptides | Bovine, Marine, Chicken | Improves skin elasticity, reduces wrinkles, strengthens joints and bone density. |
| Creatine Peptides | Synthetic / Animal | Enhances athletic performance, power output, and muscle recovery. |
| Bioactive Whey Peptides | Dairy | Supports muscle synthesis and exhibits antioxidant/antimicrobial properties. |
| Marine Oligopeptides | Fish | Known for supporting cardiovascular health and helping manage blood pressure. |
| Soy/Plant Peptides | Soy, Peas, Hemp | Often used for metabolic health, lowering cholesterol, and weight management. |
Key Benefits of Peptide Nutraceuticals
Collagen peptides are often used in beauty routines because they directly stimulate fibroblasts to create new collagen. Certain peptides help repair the intestinal lining, making them popular for addressing "leaky gut" issues. Many plant and dairy-derived peptides have natural antimicrobial and immunomodulatory effects.
Several peptides are thought to accelerate tissue repair after intense exercise or injury.
Regulation of nutraceutical peptides
In 1989, Dr S. DeFelice coined the term “Nutraceutical” as a blend between "nutrition" and "pharmaceutical"; as such, they are sold over the counter as dietary supplements. As a result, these peptides are not as strictly regulated or tested as prescription-strength injectable peptides. The term “nutraceutical” has no official legal or regulatory definition in the US or international market. Therefore, it is wise to always check for third-party tested brands to ensure purity and quality.
Categorization
Peptide nutraceuticals can be categorized by their specific health targets and structural properties. Many of these peptides are generally available over the counter as oral supplements, topical creams, or functional foods, unlike synthetic pharmaceutical peptides, which require a prescription or injection.
The primary peptide nutraceuticals available on the market are organized according to their main health benefits:
- Skin, Joint, & Anti-Aging Peptides
These are the most commercially successful peptide nutraceuticals, heavily utilized in beauty and orthopedic wellness.
Collagen Hydrolysate (Collagen Peptides)
Broken-down collagen fibers from bovine, marine, or chicken sources for improving skin elasticity, hair thickness, nail strength, and joint cartilage repair.
GHK-Cu (Copper Peptides)
A naturally occurring tripeptide complexed with copper. While sometimes taken orally, it is most popular in topical nutraceutical creams used for wound healing, skin remodeling, and stimulating hair follicles.
Keratin Peptides
Solubilized, highly bioavailable keratin proteins used for improving the structural integrity of structural hair and nail cells.
- Muscle Growth & Athletic Performance Peptides
Often found in sports nutrition supplements to enhance recovery and power output.
Creatine Peptides
Creatine bound to specific peptide chains, such as whey peptides, to improve solubility and absorption speed over standard creatine monohydrate recommended for ATP (energy) production in muscles, strength, and cellular hydration.
Bioactive Whey Peptides
Short-chain peptides extracted from whey protein isolation recommended for rapid delivery of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) to kickstart muscle protein synthesis immediately post-workout.
L-Alanyl-L-Glutamine (Sustamine)
A dipeptide that combines alanine and glutamine recommended for enhanced electrolyte and water absorption in the gut, improving endurance and speeding up recovery.
- Cardiovascular & Blood Pressure Support Peptides
Many of these act as natural, mild ACE (Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme) inhibitors to help relax blood vessels.
Marine Oligopeptides (Fish Peptides)
Extracted from fish sources like bonito, sardine, or salmon recommended for supporting healthy blood pressure and overall arterial health.
Casein Phosphopeptides (CPPs)
Peptides derived from the milk protein casein that bind to minerals recommended for enhancing the absorption of calcium, magnesium, and iron in the bloodstream, supporting bone and cardiovascular health.
Ipp / Vpp Peptides (Lactotripeptides)
Specific dairy-derived tripeptides (Isoleucine-Proline-Proline and Valine-Proline-Proline) often added to functional yogurts and drinks recommended as clinical support for mild hypertension management.
- Metabolic & Weight Management Peptides
Derived primarily from plant-based sources to support metabolic function.
Soy Peptides (Soy Oligopeptides)
Enzymatically degraded soy protein isolated into tiny chains recommended for lowering LDL cholesterol, reducing fatigue, and potentially improving fat metabolism.
Pea and Hemp Peptides
Highly digestible plant-based messenger peptides recommended for managing satiety or feeling full and providing antioxidant protection.
- Gut Health & Immune Support Peptides
These target the mucosal lining of the stomach and intestine or modulate immune responses.
Glutamine Peptides
Glutamine bound to other amino acids (usually derived from wheat or soy) which makes it significantly more stable in the digestive tract than free-form L-glutamine recommended for repairing the gut lining ("leaky gut") and fueling immune cells.
Egg Albumin Hydrolysate (Egg White Peptides)
Recommended as a potent antioxidant and to support immune defenses.
